Rainy Day Hot Toddies

A classic Scottish, the Hot Toddy is a well-known method to warm you up on a cold day. Besides the secret ingredient (rum!), a good Hot Toddy contains all the warming spices we know and love like cinnamon, cloves, and even a twist of lemon! Perfect to pair with a thunderstorm or snowstorm.

What is a Hot Toddy?

A hot toddy is basically a boozy tea. I had my first one in an Irish bar in Boston after I got caught in a thunderstorm, where I was served a towel alongside my drink because of just how drenched I had been. Both of these things really served to show me the value of a boozy tea on a cold day. It warms you up inside and out, usually being spiked with either a dark rum or a whiskey, and is paired with the traditional winter spices like cloves, cinnamon, and lemon. Every family and every bar has a different version, but this recipe is the closest recreation of the drink that kept me from freezing on a rainy day!
