Why Your Bathroom Should be Greener
Besides being just plain pretty, plants are extremely versatile in the bathroom. With the high humidity levels helping you keep them alive, in the last few years more and more people have been actually putting plants in their showers.
Hanging baskets from your ceilings and curtain rods help to add height and interest to a space, which is even more important when that space is small.
Depending on the plants, they can even make your bathroom smell better! Some plants are even specifically known for filtering out air toxins, including asbestos.
Challenges of Plants in the Bathroom
There are a couple things to keep in mind when looking for plants around your house but the goal is always the same: try to keep it alive and looking good. You don’t want something you have to baby 24/7 just because it wasn’t going to thrive in your bathroom conditions. So when you’re picking out plants keep in mind these factors:
Light Conditions
Bright, medium, low light
Humidity Levels
Some plants can live off of just the humidity of your showering schedule, and some will just get moldy(succulents). Always best to do your research!
Plant Maintenance
Here are my top bathroom plant choices.
1. Ferns
Easily my #1 choice for a bathroom. These plants THRIVE on high humidity and low light. Incredibly low maintenance, especially with the humidity. There are over 10,000 species of fern, and I guarantee there’s one that’s right for your bathroom. These also make great hanging plants.

2. Snake Plants
Snake Plants are another great choice because of their virtual indestructability. Their unique shape adds some great height to your room, but also optimizes their leaves to act ass extremely efficient air filters. Unlike most other plants, snake plants actually filter CO2 out of your spaces at night, as opposed to only during the day. It is also known to filter out benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene.

Maintenance: SO Low
Watering: 1/week-1/2 weeks
3. Monstera Delicosa
Monsteras are gorgeous, dramatic, tropical plants that were basically built for the humidity levels of a bathroom. Depending on the type you get(vining or free standing), Monsteras can get very large and are fast growers. Be careful though, these guys love light, so if you go this route make sure that your bathroom conditions won’t kill them.

4. Palm
Specifically, the parlor palm is a great apartment plant. It’s tall, not wide, so it doesn’t take up a lot of precious counter space. It’s also one of the most pet friendly plants you’ll find. These can grow anywhere between 4” to 4’ depending on the size of your pot.

Watering: Drought Tolerant, 1/2 weeks
5. Golden Pothos
We all know this cute Golden Pothos that’s all over Instagram, but did you know that it’s almost as effective of an air filter as the snake plant? This plant has been featured in NASA reports and TED Talks, and in one experiment removed 73% of benzene from a sealed experimental chamber in just a 24-hour period. It’s a great vertical plant for hanging and is a huge fan of bathroom humidity.

Watering: 1/week-1/2 weeks
Note: Also filters benzene, formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene from the air. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF PETS, very toxic.
