Where to Find Fun & Affordable Pots

Pots Are Great, But They’re Expensive

I remember when I first started getting into houseplants, and the first time I realized the cute pot I’d picked out for my succulent was about twice the price of that succulent. I was floored.

Since that time I’ve started compiling a list of sources that keep my planting from being an expensive hobby and maintain it as just a medium expensive hobby. Now we’re putting it together so you don’t have to! Keep in mind: we’ve managed to get some affiliate links for some of these products, so we get a small kickback for the purchases made on those sites denoted by an ‘*’.

Along those lines, keep an eye out in the coming weeks because I’m also compiling a list of where to get your plants for a little cheaper!

Individual Favourites

These are some of my personal favourites from Spring 2021!

1. Sitting Pot

2. Hanging Kraft Bag - $16

Homeplistic Hanging Bag Pot.jpg

This 5x5” Kraft bag planter has been a great addition to my house(although I got it on sale). The colour of the bag really makes my Golden Pothos pop and it’s very sturdy. I would 10/10 order again.

3. Blue Standing Planter - $25

I’m a huge fan of standing planters. I just think they make everything look a little more light and airy! And anyone whose looked for these know just how expensive they can be. This pot has a 6” diameter and stands 12” tall. Plus, it’s made of terracotta and wood. No plastic here!

4. Magnetic Fridge Planter* - $18

This magnetic planter is perfect for sticking onto your fridge to help bring some nice herbs into your kitchen! Because it’s magnetic, it also means it would work on metal shelving units, window sills, or random metallic Ikea things.

This planter is also self watering, so if you have more of a brown thumb than a green thumb this might be perfect for you!

5. Bulbasaur Planter* - $10

I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. It’s cute and nerdy. It’s easily used as decor and it makes your interaction with your plant better just by existing. I have this one and I would buy it again.

6. Greek Statue Planter* - $26

I would say this is my favourite stand-out planter of the season. It’s somehow fun, cute, and sophisticated. I picture her sitting on my bookshelf and severely classing up my trashy trilogies.

She’s made of cemented and hand-painted. She’s a little pricy, but she’s a statement piece so I personally think she’s worth it. And remember, you can always find cheaper if you’re willing to dig!

Great Places

With great prices, come great determination. Some of these places you’ll have to dig through, but that’s where you always find the good stuff!

1. Craigslist / OfferUp

People are always looking to unload stuff when they’re moving, and it’s a great way to get some great pots for almost nothing. I constantly see people selling 5+ pots for around $20. It’s awesome for small planters, but even better for large planters. I found the 18x18” lemon tree pot for only $25! An almost identical one in Home Depot was $75!

Tips:

  • Use as many key words you can think of (pot, plants, planter, pots, etc)

  • Look around the 1st of the month and the 15th of the month; this is when people are most likely to be moving and unloading

  • Always bring a buddy when you’re doing a pickup

2. Marshalls / Homegoods

Marshalls+Interior.jpg

Marshalls, Homegoods, and TJ Maxx are all owned by the same company. Their business model is to diversify their shopping with niched stores to capitalize on the market they’re after. They sell products with minour flaws in them at a heavily discounted price. 9/10, I haven’t been able to notice any real flaws with my purchases.

This is hands down one of the BEST place to go shopping for unique and large planters. I a midcentury modern style standing planter that had a 12” diameter for only $20. When I was searching online for an almost identical product, there wasn’t a single standing planter for less that $60.

I highly recommend, but be willing to dig! Definitely better items and prices in person.

3. World Market

World Market Sexies 1.jpg

World Market has some high furniture prices, but some really great smaller home decor prices! Luckily, this includes pots and planters. Their styles varies from season to season, but overall they have a good combination of quirky and modern. For larger sizes, as long as you don’t mind a little metal or plastic, they’ve got some great options there too!

Be mindful though, these are the gateway products and you’ll start getting a lot more stuff than you realize if you start browsing! Keep your eyes out for those sales!

4. Ikea

Ikea Pots Sexies 1.jpg

Ahhhh Ikea, the first apartment staple. Even if you primarily buy your furniture second hand, I’m sure you’ve ended up with a small to large collection of Ikea pieces over the years. They’re known for their affordable, fun, and functional products, and luckily this extends to their Outdoor Collection.

In the last few years, I’ve been noticing the Ikea outdoor furniture has been killing it! It’s been affordable and good for small spaces. Their pots/planters are no exception! They’ve got a lot of good basic planters that can blend into any space at a reasonable price.

5. Hardware Stores

The garden centres at places like Lowes and Home Depot are legendary for offering a lot of affordable and fashionable plants. Because these places cater to larger-scale projects rather than individual pieces, their prices for individual pieces are lower to encourage you to buy a collection. Luckily for us, this extends to planters!

These hardware stores are a great resource for getting large pots as a low price (as long as you don’t mind plastic or rubber). But it you don’t mind these materials, these brands go out of their way to try to disguise their planters as a higher-grade material such as ceramic or terracotta.

6. Etsy - Flawed Planters*

Etsy is filled with incredible artisans creating unique, handmade pieces. A lot of time and effort goes into making these perfect, but we’re all only human. Sometimes the glaze gets chipped or some of the clay isn’t as straight as the artists want.

A great way to find some incredible pots at a not-so-Etsy price is to look for the flawed / discounted/ imperfect planters that artists put up. 99% of the time, it’s an imperfection that only the artist can detect!

Note: this goes for a lot of Etsy products, not just planters. But if you’re looking for glazed food-related items, make sure that they’re still food safe!
